You've seen the beautiful photos and read the reviews, but you might still be wondering: what actually happens during a weaving workshop? What does it feel like to step inside, sit down at a loom, and create something from scratch?
We believe the experience itself is an art form. It’s a carefully crafted journey designed to be relaxing, inspiring, and completely beginner-friendly. To show you what awaits, we invite you to take a virtual, step-by-step tour of the MyRugy workshop experience.
Step 1: Arrival & The Welcome Tea
Your journey begins the moment you step through our door. You leave the energetic bustle of the Medina behind and enter a calm, creative oasis. The first thing we do is invite you to sit, relax, and partake in Morocco's most important ritual of hospitality: a traditional mint tea ceremony.
As your instructor pours the sweet, fragrant tea from a silver pot held high in the air, you'll have a chance to meet your fellow participants and learn a little about the history you are about to engage with. This isn't a class you rush into; it's an experience you ease into.
Step 2: An Introduction to the Craft & Materials
Once you are settled, we introduce you to the tools of the trade. Your instructor will walk you through the anatomy of the traditional wooden looms, explaining how the vertical warp threads form the backbone of your creation. You'll be introduced to our vibrant wall of color—our collection of 100% natural Moroccan wool yarn. You can touch the different textures and choose the colors that speak to you, planning the unique design for your piece.
Step 3: Learning the Fundamental Knot
This is where the magic begins. You'll take your place at your own personal loom, which will be pre-warped and ready for you to begin. Our master weaver will then demonstrate the single most important technique: the Berber knot.
She will guide you slowly and clearly, showing you how to tie the knot around the warp threads to create the plush pile of the rug. Because our groups are always small, she will come to each person, personally guiding your hands until you feel the motion click. There is no pressure and no rush. Our goal is to ensure you feel confident and successful from the very first knot.
Step 4: Finding Your Rhythm
With the basic technique mastered, you begin to weave. This is the heart of the workshop. The next couple of hours are a peaceful, meditative experience. You'll find yourself falling into a comfortable rhythm—tying a row of knots, beating them down with the heavy comb, and watching your creation slowly grow before your eyes.
The atmosphere is one of quiet creativity, punctuated by friendly conversation, more mint tea, and the gentle guidance of your instructor, who is always nearby to help if you have a question or want to try a new pattern.
Step 5: Finishing Your Masterpiece
The most exciting moment arrives when your weaving is complete. Your instructor will show you the final steps to secure your work. Then comes the satisfying snip as your creation is cut from the loom. It's a moment of pride and accomplishment as you hold a beautiful, tangible piece of textile art that, just a few hours ago, was only a ball of yarn and an idea.
Step 6: A Lasting Memory
Before you leave, we take photos of you and your fellow creators proudly holding your finished pieces. You'll depart not just with a one-of-a-kind souvenir, but with a new skill, a deeper connection to Moroccan culture, and the story of the afternoon you became a weaver in the heart of Marrakech.
This isn't just a class; it's a journey. Every step is designed to be enjoyable, authentic, and inspiring. If you're ready to create your own Marrakech story, one knot at a time, your loom is waiting.
