What to Wear in Marrakech: A Practical Style Guide

What to Wear in Marrakech: A Practical Style Guide

Packing for a trip to Marrakech can be exciting, but it often comes with one big question: What should I wear? It’s a city that is both modern and deeply traditional, stylish and conservative.

Navigating the local customs with your wardrobe doesn't have to be complicated. The key is to find the perfect balance between respecting the local culture, staying comfortable in the Moroccan climate, and expressing your personal style. Dressing with awareness will not only feel more respectful but will also enhance your travel experience, allowing you to connect more easily with the city and its people.

Here is our practical style guide for what to wear on your unforgettable trip to Marrakech.

The Golden Rule: Comfort and Respect

While Marrakech is accustomed to tourists from all over the world, it is located in a conservative Muslim country. The single best piece of advice is to dress with respect for the local culture. This generally means aiming to cover your shoulders and knees when you are out exploring the main public areas like the Medina and the souks.

This isn't about strict rules, but about courtesy. It's a simple gesture that is appreciated by locals and has the practical benefit of minimizing unwanted attention, allowing you to feel more at ease. Plus, covering up is the best way to protect your skin from the strong Moroccan sun.

The Perfect Marrakech Wardrobe for Women

Think light, breathable fabrics and flowing silhouettes.

  • Bottoms: Loose-fitting trousers made of linen or cotton are your best friend. Maxi skirts, midi skirts, and culottes are also perfect. While you can wear shorts in tourist areas, you'll feel much more comfortable in longer styles when exploring the Medina.

  • Tops: T-shirts, blouses, and loose button-down shirts are ideal. They keep you cool while providing coverage. It’s a great idea to pack a large, lightweight pashmina or scarf. It's the most versatile accessory you can bring—use it to cover your shoulders when wearing a tank top, drape it over your head if the sun is too strong, or wrap up in it during a cool evening.

  • Dresses & Jumpsuits: Maxi and midi dresses are practically the uniform for stylish female travelers in Marrakech. A flowy, long dress is both elegant and comfortable. Jumpsuits are another fantastic one-piece solution.

  • Footwear: Comfort is King! You will be walking for miles on uneven cobblestone streets. Prioritize comfortable, broken-in shoes. Stylish flat sandals, espadrilles, or comfortable fashion sneakers are your best options. Leave the high heels at home unless you are only wearing them for dinner inside your Riad.

A Simple Style Guide for Men

For men, the guidelines are more relaxed but still important.

  • Bottoms: Chinos, linen trousers, and smart, knee-length shorts are all perfectly acceptable and widely worn.

  • Tops: T-shirts, polo shirts, and short-sleeved button-down shirts are great for the daytime heat. It’s wise to pack a light sweater or jacket for cooler evenings.

  • Footwear: Comfortable loafers, boat shoes, or sneakers are ideal for navigating the city streets.

What About at Your Riad or the Pool?

Within the private walls of your Riad, resort, or at a swimming pool, the rules relax completely. Standard swimwear, including bikinis and swim trunks, is absolutely fine. You can lounge by the pool just as you would in any European or American destination.

Dressing for Activities & Evenings

  • For Dinner: In the evening, especially at a nicer Riad restaurant or a trendy spot in Gueliz, feel free to dress up. A stylish maxi dress or a smart shirt and chinos are perfect.

  • For the Desert: If you're taking a trip to the Agafay or Sahara desert, layers are key. It will be hot during the day but can get surprisingly cold as soon as the sun sets.

  • For Activities: For a hands-on experience like a cooking class or a creative session like the MyRugy weaving workshop, comfort is paramount. Choose loose, breathable clothing that you can sit and move around in easily. The focus is on the experience, so wear something that lets you fully immerse yourself without feeling restricted.

Ultimately, the key to dressing in Marrakech is to be mindful and practical. Prioritize breathable fabrics, comfortable shoes, and a touch of respectful coverage, and you'll be perfectly dressed to enjoy every magical moment the city has to offer.
