Why You Should Choose a Kit with Natural Wool Yarn

When you’re choosing your first DIY weaving kit, it’s easy to be dazzled by bright colors and low prices. The loom and the tools are important, but the single most crucial element—the component that will define your entire creative experience and the quality of your finished piece—is the yarn itself.

Many beginner kits use synthetic acrylic yarn. But does it really matter if it’s natural wool or synthetic acrylic?

The answer is a resounding yes. Choosing a kit with high-quality, natural wool yarn is the single best decision you can make. Here’s why it makes all the difference.

 


 

1. The Tactile Experience: How It Feels

This is the most immediate difference, the one you will feel from the moment you open the box.

Natural Wool: Real wool feels alive. It has a soft, breathable, and substantial feel. It contains natural lanolin, which gives it a slight, pleasant texture and makes it resilient in your hands. The fibers have character and a subtle, satisfying friction as you weave.

Synthetic Acrylic: Acrylic is a plastic, a petroleum product. It can often feel squeaky, slippery, or plasticky to the touch. It lacks the warmth and organic texture of a natural fiber, making the process of working with it less satisfying.

The difference in material directly translates to the beauty of your finished wall hanging.

Depth of Color: Natural wool absorbs dye in a more complex way than synthetic fibers. This results in richer, deeper, more nuanced colors that have subtle variations in tone, known as “abrash.” This gives the final piece incredible visual depth and character.

Rich Texture: The slight, natural imperfections in hand-spun or natural wool create a beautiful, rustic texture. Your finished piece will look and feel like a genuine textile, with an authentic, handmade charm. Acrylic yarn, being perfectly uniform, can result in a final product that looks flat and a bit lifeless by comparison.

3. Durability & Longevity: How It Lasts

Natural Wool: Wool is an incredibly durable, resilient fiber. It is naturally stain-resistant and moisture-wicking (thanks to lanolin) and is even fire-retardant. A piece woven with good quality wool will not only last for years but will often look even better with age, becoming a true family heirloom.

Synthetic Acrylic: Acrylic fibers are not as strong and are prone to “pilling” over time. They can also attract more dust and dirt, and can look worn and faded more quickly than a wool piece.

For thousands of years, the art of weaving has been a partnership between a human and a sheep. It is an ancient craft built on the transformation of a natural, raw material into something of both beauty and function.

Synthetic Acrylic: Acrylic yarn was only invented in the 1940s. While it has its uses, it has no connection to the deep history and heritage of the craft of weaving.
